ACEO - Ragu by akitku ACEO - Ragu by akitku
Another ACEO, this time for Munen the co-author (along with joolita ) of the wonderful comic Of Conquests and Consequences which you can read here: ocac.smackjeeves.com/comics/17…. The funny thing about ACEOs for me is that they appear bigger on the DA page than they are in real life...weird.

Ragu is one of my favourite characters of the series (it's actually very hard to chose a favourite character as they are all wonderful! <3)
I had a lot of fun with this one though I have to say I am terrible at drawing hands

Very nice shading! She looks very cool - like the bright, perky type of character. :)

I love everything about it :wow: - the colours you chose (again, such lovely constrast between the warm sand colours and the electric blue...), Ragu's expression, the blade of her sword (i can't draw blades at all. Yours seems so solid and reliable), everything. I don't think you have any reason to be dissatisfied with the hands - ACEOs are so small (even in this larger version) that it would be very hard to fuss over anatomy and shading.

I'm really happy you like it. I'm very fond of Ragu, she's very cute! I'm really looking forward to seeing more of her in the next chapter!
The sword I really just drew based on the way you designed it on the pages when they are raiding the Imperial camp. I like how you decided to make it a curved, one-edged blade. Were the Imperial swords straight?

Design is one thing, execution is another. I still think your blade looks better.
I don't know much about weaponry, so i basically chose sabre-type blades for Huzsa (though Uene carries kukri knives, because they're pretty...><) and heavy one-and-a-half swords for the Empire (i made the cross-guards different though, which would probably make them weaker, but since some of the weapons one can see in movies seem entirely impractical even to my untrained eye, i decided not to feel sorry about it :D)

i'm afraid you'll have to wait several scenes before Ragu appears again... But she'll be wearing fancy stuff, so maybe it'll be worth the wait :D

I love the lily-like pattern in the background, it's really beautiful and the blue and gold really compliment each other and enhance the figure in the foreground. I love the shading on the sword, and Ragu's adventurous expression is wonderful too! :D

I'm so glad you like it dear, thank you! I was pretty happy with the pattern in the background as I rarely do such patterns (you can still see the pencil lines in some places, unfortunately). Glad she comes off as adventurous, that how I always saw her.

Lol now that you mention the size thing, it is kind of funny, but for the actual size they are, you did a fantastic job, it looks like this was bigger than it is! i love the gold patterns

Thanks so much! Yeah, those ACEO sizes are really small and working in all the details is quite hard...Still a good exercise I think. Though I'm a bit annoyed about the visible pencil lines to be honest...

I wish I had time to follow all the wonderful things on offer, but sadly my free time at the moment is limited. She does look a feisty, if rather perilous character, and your problem with hands is a fairly common one in my experience. Indeed, you generally achieve a better result than a great many of my students! The secret of drawing hands lies with the bony structure that underlies even the most delicate and graceful appendage- that the human skeleton, with its cargo of mortality, should have become a thing of horror and repulsion is a great pity, imho.

Ah, I'm not surprised, with all the writing you have to get done now! :) The hands, I don't know, sometimes I feel that the more I practice the worse they look...I don't know. Perhaps I will try to draw some skeleton hands for practice now...though often I have trouble with making them more substantial, in my pictures they usually look so spidery...I don't know.

It helps sometimes to see the fingers as a unit, instead of separate phalanges. You can draw arcs along the knuckles and the first joints of the fingers, which can help, or you can just draw the complete outer shape as though the fingers were not separate but formed a squared off shape something like a mitten or a sculptor's sketch, and then work out the position of each finger and thumb according to that.  Good luck, and don't give up hope!

Sorry for replying so late! The characters are very interesting and well developed and I just love the psychological aspect of the story. It is not rushed at all and the characters really make sense if you know what I mean! Glad you like my version of Ragu. :)

I saw this on tumblr! She looks so cool here and her expression looks very familiar indeed. She's her typical cheerful, excited self, it seems :P

The pattern behind her really suits the colour scheme without taking our attention away from her face. Great balance!

I'm so glad you like it! Thank you! I had a lot of fun with the pattern and I'm glad you say it doesn't distract because I was worried about that actually. Yeah, I tried to draw her as cheerful and energetic as she usually is in the comic. Thanks again! :)
