Ai vist lo lop, lo rainard, la lebre by akitku Ai vist lo lop, lo rainard, la lebre by akitku
I saw the wolf, the fox, the hare,
I saw the wolf, the fox dance.
All three were circling round the tree

A quick watercolour inspired by a medieval Occitan song which I've been listening a lot to lately. I'm really, really looking forward to spring! On a different note, my watercolours have become messier recently. Maybe I'm just tired. I hope it goes away...

You can hear the song here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kn2yae…

This is so beautiful! You are really good at giving an immersive atmosphere. I am amazed at how well you handle watercolours even when you say they are messy. There isn't much to critique here other than the characters don't look grounded and the transition from the front to the back is too harsh. This is a really nice, simple composition overall.

Thank you so much for the great comment! :) I'm really glad you like the atmosphere of this one! I think you're very right about them not looking grounded enough, especially the wolf seems to hover slightly over the grass...;) It is something I still need to work on. Thank you! :)

Grounding your characters seems like it would be easy but it really isn't. :D (Big Grin)

Tło Ci wyszło po mistrzowsku, ta domieszka granatu daje jak dla mnie cudny efekt! Te białe kwiatki czym dokładnie zostały narysowane? Białym żelopisem, jakimś tuszem?

Messy? Are you kidding? The grass looks so lush and thick, and i simply love the smooth transition from dark colours in the foreground to the subtly lit background... And the poses are just so dynamic and lifelike... To me this definitely counts among the best and most intriguing works in your gallery

Thank you so much! I admit, I am more fond of it now then I was originally. At first everything about this picture felt wrong and I was pretty disappointed, but I see it differently now! :) I'm glad the poses are dynamic, as you know this is a never-ending issue for me! ;)

Jeden z moich ulubionych utworów! Sama chciałam zrobić plecionkę o takiej tematyce. Piękny obrazek, bardzo podoba mi się ta lekkość postaci i delikatność tła :)

I might suggest though a negative painting approach for the trees in the background

How fantastic! I love the greens of the forest and how this does indeed look like a secluded little patch away from the main track. Their individual poses are brilliant in conveying the whole motion of the dance, they do indeed look as though they've been caught in an instant of action and haven't just posed that way lol. I also love that their outfits compliment their mask, especially the hare and her little foot socks.
A part of me though feels this as almost slightly sinister though, l don't know why lol.

Thank you! :D I rarely use greens as the dominant colour so this was fun if a little frustrating at times.  Glad to know they don't look too much like they're posing - I always worry any time I try to draw people moving that's what they look like! ;) I think the hare was actually my favourite.

I sort of felt like that too when I was drawing - I think masks sometimes feel a little ominous maybe?

God this is so lovely.. It's so happy and dynamic and beaming with oncoming spring and I love it!!
I can't help thinking that I'd love wallpaper for my bedroom based on that landscape and that little field of snowdrops in particular.. Really very nice..

Wow, this is so cool! This is so different from your usual style! I love the masks they're wearing and they indeed look very festive and happy about spring coming along.

I love how you made the forest behind them so light and how the foreground is gloomier, blueer and a bit more mysterious. It really looks like the forest is being lit alight by spring sunshine!

Are these your characters or are they just random?

Thanks so much! It is a bit different right? I don't know why but I was just doing things a bit differently even though I wasn't trying to...I wasn't sure if I want the foreground or background to be the darker one. The idea for there to be this strong contrast between them was there from the start but I wasn't sure which one should go where so to speak.

They're just some random characters. I'm reading that book about the military orders in Occitania and listening to Occitan music and just getting a feel of Sebastian's place of origin. ;)

Ah, I see! It was  good choice to make the two parts of the forest contrast.

How would Sebastian react to this? Would he join in?

Gah! You beat me to it! I recently heard the song, performed by Arany Zoltan and wished to do a piece like this. The figures are brilliant as always, but what I really love are grass blades and the flowers. Amazing work there? Are they watercolors or guaches?

Will you draw a version too? Can't wait to see it! Arany Zoltan's interpretations are awesome aren't they? Do you know his version of Stella Splendens? It's so beautiful. Another one which I want to draw something to at some point.

The blades of grass and the snowdrops are acrylic inks actually. (mixed with a little of watercolour).

I think it's hard for everybody.  It's hard in 3D too - I often supplement moving poses with motion blur (which looks nice, but makes a very slow render).

This looks like some Medieval rite of passage or festival or a depiction of a legendary love triangle- I love it!  You've drawn the dancing poses really well, they remind me of illuminated manuscripts from the middle ages where people are illustrated performing dances which they think will stop the plague. I bet you could form a really interesting story around this. The lighting in the forest background is truly delightful and I love all the little snowdrops in the glade- such a pretty little added detail! :D

Ah true, it could be some sort of ritual dance for the coming of spring or smth. And I love your love triangle idea - that could be quite a story. Wonder who is who!
I'm so glad you could tell they're snowdrops btw. Usually I just draw 'flowers' without thinking about a specific type, but this time I did have these particular ones in mind.

NOW I finally know what Occitan actually sounds like- thank you so much! The poses here are brilliant- and I see you have them in snowdrops which are just finishing over here ahead of the daffodils and later the bluebells. I too cannot wait for spring!

You may say the watercolour is messy, but in fact it has an interesting quality nonetheless- at first glance I thought it looked like an illustration for La Fontaine

It sounds nice doesn't it? A bit like Italian as well as French right? It' amazing how you can listen to music from so long ago on youtube. There are some more occitan troubadour songs to be found there and even scraps of poems.
I absolutely love this one: www.youtube.com/watch?v=jkp2GH… Perhaps it's naiive but it always amazes me that things so beautiful and, well, delicate sounding, can come from such brutal times...It's such a dissonance...

Ah, I haven't seen any snowdrops yet. Spring is always late here. But I'm waiting eagerly! :)

I wonder- perhaps what we hear is a kind of debased Latin which might indeed sound like Italian- it's quite possible that there were many offshoots of from the kind of Latin spoken by colonial Romans.

There is real beauty and delicacy in the music- and a kind of yearning, perhaps, for peace and love amidst the brutality. I've been sitting here transfixed listening- I see down the line they have some canticles of Hildegard von Bingen- www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ei88J4… - something a bit more ethereal

I wonder- snowdrops are a February flower here, the green of spring with snowwhite petals. Already in March the hills are beginning to blossom and bluebells begin to push through the dead Bracken...no, Spring is not far off.

Great illustration! Very whimsical and with great atmosphere!
You did such a great job with the dancers. They look so lively.
The little white flowers in clearing (snowdrops?) are a very nice touch. Your colour choices are great, particularly how you painted the background with a lighter and warmer shade of green, it makes the whole atmosphere more playful and less ominous than it would have been if you'd gone with something darker or cooler than the foreground.
(Great song, and that video was a lot of fun...made me want to dance XD)

So glad you liked the song too. It does make one want to go and dance round a tree or a maypole, right? And I'm really, really not one for dancing usually! ;)
