I cast a spell on the city, asking it to last. by akitku I cast a spell on the city, asking it to last. by akitku
Theodosios contemplating his beloved City. It won't last.

The picture was inspired by the last line of the poem "at dawn" which you can hear here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZFHhIn…; I found this to be such a perfectly...vampiric...poem. While it is about a different city, that last line was just so fitting.

The picture itself was terribly frustrating. It looks nothing like it did in my head. And that skyline is way too modest...still, I managed to avoid complete disaster, so here it is! Maybe I'll give it another go at some point.

While I'm not familiar with the story I do like the image. The colours are subtle and the detailing is very nice. The city reminds me of Constantinople before it was overrun by the Turks and its name changed to Istanbul.

Actually, yes, you are spot on. Theodosios is a character of mine who is a Byzantine bureaucrat and extremely devoted to the Empire and Constantinople specifically. I'm really happy that's what it reminded you of!

Ooof, I know what you mean. Like my Ruso is really in love with his city too, and although he was kicked out of it and had to watch it start a civil war, I never did intend to make it fall. Now you're giving me ideas mwahahaha

i know the feeling of picturing something in your head and drawing it completely different from what you wanted ..is quite frustrating indeed..
But this is really beautiful..and, just as you know, the way you draw illustration like this one makes me remember what i love about illustrations, the combination of colors, the composition...there aren't many artist that still draw traditionally and in the kind of style i like best, and i like seeing little scenes of your stories of in general things you like, so don't be too hard with yourself please, and keep doing beautiful artworks! :aww:
Anyway, i like the sky (you used gouche here? because the grainy effect give lot of deep to the sky i like it a lot!), i also love the way you did the moon, bright and perfect! And the feeling of this scene, the way he is watching his City with a sad and melanchonic expression is my favourite part i think qith all the details of his clothes and the color you chose for them!

Gosh, thank you so much for the long and kind comment! I'm so glad you know what I mean and also that you like the style of my drawings! :blushes:

Actually, the sky was all done in watercolour. The walls I did with watercolour and gouache and parts of his clothing were in gouache. To be honest the grainy effect of the sky was through a bit  of a mistake...But in the end I like it!

Even if the picture was hard to work on, the outcome is just fascinating! Perhaps you have had something more magnificent in your mind, but the picture is lovely as it is with these medieval-style trees and stars. I love the way the moonlight permeates the whole scene, the bluish colour scheme fits here just perfectly! As for the character, I really like his face, such a nice portrayal!

Thank you so much dear! Well in the end I was pretty pleased with it, though while I was working I had two pretty serious disasters which I managed to avert in the end! :)
Problem is I usually envisage something more magnificent/epic/dramatic/scary...but my style is simplistic and sparse and pictures other than portraits rarely come out the way I want them. All the reason more your words make me happy! Thank you! :)

I like how this is readily identifiable as a nighttime shot, but is still quite light and has a lot of color variation. No small task!

Oh wow this is beautiful! And so detailed as well- such a great title too! I love all the stars in the sky and the shimmering moon as well. Great use of perspective her and those trees are very pretty, they remind me of Japanese prints. I love the details on Theodosios's cloak and robes, the embroidery is incredibly well done. I love all the shading and brickwork on the city buildings too, a wonderful piece. I always love learning more about your characters, they're fascinating! :D

Oh, this is just splendid! The sky here is so deep, almost tangible, while the bright line of the walls looks more blurred, much less fleshed-out, sort of fragile... which i suppose is how Theodosios sees them, judging from his expression. Ah, Constantinople... The soundtrack fits so perfectly... I think this is your most atmospheric work to date. It really touches the heart.

I'm so glad you like this one! Hmm...I haven't intended the walls to look fragile; but sort of blurry, far away and more mystical then real, yes! And I guess that does make them a bit less tangible and more fragile. And you're right, I think he does view them with a type of...tenderness and concern...with which one usually does not tend to look at walls.

Haha, yeah the beard....well he's in his early 30's here. But he started growing a beard at 20 (to Chlodvig's amusement). He was growing up in a transition phase when it comes to beards, as they were just starting to become popular among the civilian class in Byzantium, while the military men still tried to look classical Roman and usually went clean-shaven. (At least that's what I got from my reading...)

How young is he in the other pictures you've done of him where he looks more like a typical bishie? 16 or something? xD Is Chlodvig better at browing beards than Theo?
Reply
:iconakitku:
akitku Featured By Owner Oct 3, 2015  Hobbyist Traditional Artist
Haha, yeah he's in his meed teens in all those 'bishie'-like pictures. Actually one of the reasons for the beard was to look less 'pretty'. ;)
Nah, Chlodvig is just amused by Theodosios suddenly being so fashionable. But Theodosios is much better at growing a beard, I doubt Chlodvig would be able to grow a full beard like that at 20, even if he tried...

Absolutely beautiful, I love the colour choice as always, the soft blues are used really well for the entire night scene and I love the way you did the moon reflecting on the water so subtly with white ink, I also love how you showed the distance of the city walls with a slightly softer edge to the bricks.  This piece has a really calm feel to it - you're work, especially in this one, reminds me a lot of Persian miniatures, especially illustrations from the Shahnameh
