Nice night for an ambush by akitku Nice night for an ambush by akitku
"I see 'em captain! They're gon' walk right into it for sure!"
"Your skills of observation astound me as always, Kurshan."

So I had the lineart for this picture lying in my stack of unfinished pictures since early March! I'm so happy I managed to finally paint it, though it was frustrating. Too much details! And the paper was soaking up way too much water and wouldn't dry. I don't even remember where I got this paper but I hope I don't have any more of it...And Kurshan's clothing was almost a disaster....

I love the quiet elegance of this one. I'm sorry the paper you used
wasn't optimal but your results are as excellent as usual.

I love all the details, and your dialogue really adds to it! I also love the way you paint night time, and the little fireflies!

Haha, well the dialogue isn't quite as solemn/serious as the scene appears to be...but that's how they are I guess...I love painting night scenes but I worry I make them too light - so I'm really glad to hear that! Thanks!

Haha, no the ambush will be a success this time. Kurshan is a troll and he acts like an idiot a lot of the time. But he doesn't actually mess up much at all. As for his riding skills, let's just just say that while he is not the best swordsman out there, he really is an outstanding rider.

So he can just stand on his horse like that and keep his balance? That's awesome :D

Yeah, he can even ride a horse standing up. He could ride before he could run pretty much...

Lol! I love the quotation at the top, that made me smile! A wonderfully dynamic set of poses- very eye-catching! I really like the ghostly trees behind them and Kurshan's boots are fabulous! I really like the ghostly night lighting too- it's very ethereal! Will you be doing any pieces for Inktober? :)

Thanks so much! I'm so glad you like it and that you enjoyed their short exchange...I was happy with how the lighting came out so that is good to hear! :)

As for the inktober, yeah I'm doing it but I've only been uploading them on tumblr. I will probably upload them in batches/collage form at the end of each week. They're only small drawings so I thought it's not worth spamming people too much with them! ;)
How about you, are you going to try it?

Oh, i can see why this one took time to finish - all these details are simply amazing! Chlodvig's gear, Kurshan's fancy horsetack... My favourite little thing here is how you made Clodvig's imposing physique clearly apparent from the relative size of his mount.
Also, the entire work has such a tangible mood! The wisps are a great touch too - i love that the horses seem to be looking at tem as if uncertain whether this is a potential danger or not...
All in all i am really happy you foud time to finish this - it is among my favourite works of yours.

Gosh, thank you so much for the great comment! :D I'm so glad the fancy horsetack grabbed your attention and that you noticed the size thing. Yeah, Chlodvig has to choose the bigger horses and he usually visually dwarfs them anyway. Actually medieval horses were a bit smaller than modern ones, so I also tried to suggest that...
Anyway, I'm really happy you like this one!

Wow wow wow thisis stunning! I love the composition with the trees working to frame the figures (those trees are so beautiful) and you might colours are as always, perfect.
Kurshan's outfit is great, I love the pants and also the way his horse's mane has been tied in plaits
I wonder who they're ambushing

So glad you like it! Thank you!

Haha, yeah Kurshan thinks style is important. And he thinks Chlodvig has no style...Seriously, so maybe the man is an amazing fighter and smart as well...but he really doesn't know how to dress himself OR his horse. Have you seen that harness? Sheesh...;)

Well they're supposed to be intercepting an enemy contingent which is trying to join with the main army besieging the stronghold of Nesebar (Mesembria). But this doesn't really look like the nature around that region...I just enjoy drawing forests! ;)

Lol well Kurshan has a point you know, no one will take you seriously if you can't even co-ordinate your tunic to match your broadsword - and you can tell a lot about a person about their shoes (apparently) so curly-toes say 'look at me, I have style and am not afraid to let everyone know" - meanwhile Chlodvig is just sat there merging in with the background in his dull mundane functional-wear *shudder of pity* - that harness doesn't compliment the horse's figure at all Chlodvig, no wonder it looks so unhappy - it wants to be pretty like Kurshan's horse and its tassels that make it feel fast with the way they flap about when it trots

Maybe the contingent hasn't reached that close to the town yet so they're in more of a wooded area - or hey, who knows, maybe the contingent got 'lost' and took a detour

Oh yay the mercenaries again! :D I love how the blue hues go with the fireflies, they are highlighted so nicely! And I love the forest, how it has depth but is stylized as well, it all looks like a scene from fairytale book. It must be satisfying to finally finish a piece after such a long time :D

I'm so glad you like it! It was a pretty challenging piece for me, but as you say it felt great to finish a picture after it was lying around so long. Plus it's the first watercolour of my own ocs since like...April I think...

The mercenaries are awesome, I always wanna see more of them :D

I can imagine! I have lots of stories lying around for months and it's so frustrating to think that a writer's block stopped me from finishing them (I've got one where I just have to write one more paragraph out of 7 pages, and haven't been able to do it since winter) :XD:

In spite of (or perhaps because of) the problems you had with this one, it stands as one of your best, IMHO. There is a real sense of the atmosphere, the night, the dim moonlight, the patient horses ringed by fireflies (courtesy of PS?) ( the left-hand horse must surely be used to some idiot standing on the saddle-bow!)

Gosh, I am so glad to hear that! I did work really hard on this one so I'm really happy it paid off! :)
Actually the fireflies were done with guache and acrylic and masking fluid. As for the horse, yeah, it's very patient. Well it is patient of him. I doubt it would let other people try that stunt. Kurshan (or his riding skills) is sort of inspired by Hungarian csikos. But of course they don't stand on the saddle-bow...this was a bit of fantasy on my part.

I never visited Hortobágy national park when I was in Hungary, which is a pity because they evidently have exhibitions of riding by the descendants of the csikos in costume.
As for the fantasy part of your painting- are you sure? youtu.be/oDRZdvU-7S8

Ah yes, this was precisely the sort of thing that I had in mind! But they stand on these little cushions not heavy, wooden medieval saddles with the tall bow! ;) Still, Kurshan is a small, light guy, I'm sure it's ok...

Ah yes, you have been to Hungary some time ago haven't you! Hormanship is quite a thing there right? Fitting considering the Magyar background...

Well, the only horses I saw were pulling farm carts in the country outside Budapest- but in Hero's Square (Hősök tere) in the city center was a remarkable equestrian statue group depicting the tribal founders of the city on the Danube, mounted on horseback. micheleroohani.com/blog/wp-con… which I sketched many times.    travels 16
